Aug. 4--MADISON, Wis.--Creating a new test for cystic fibrosis always was much more than a business venture for Jim Prudent.
Certainly, the chief scientific officer of EraGen Biosciences wanted to boost the fortunes of the Madison biotechnology start-up. But that's not the only reason he wanted a better way to sift DNA in a baby's blood for signs of cystic fibrosis.
Success would mark a triumph of a technology he had nurtured from a mere concept.
Success would strike back at a disease that had stung his own family.
