SYDNEY, July 30 Asia Pulse - The Australian dollar opened weaker today after the United States dollar managed to make gains overnight despite poor economic data.

At 0700 AEST the Australian dollar was trading at US$0.6628/33 compared with yesterday's close of US$0.6647/52.

The local currency felt the pressure of a resurgent US dollar, which defied an early sell-off sparked by a drop in consumer confidence to close higher against most major currencies.

The Conference Board consumer confidence index fell to 76.6 in July from 83.5 in June.
