The first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church USA will learn today whether he will be permitted to serve his New Hampshire diocese.
The Rev. Gene Robinson won backing Sunday in Minneapolis from one key group at the church's 74th convention. More dioceses in the House of Deputies, a legislative body made up of clergy and laypeople, voted for him than were necessary for a win. However, some observers said that because of the way the voting was set up, Robinson would have lost if only nine laypeople had voted differently.
