Article: Kellwood, Jones Apparel Battle to Buy Bankrupt Kasper Clothing Line.

Aug. 6--Jones Apparel Group Inc. has offered to buy bankrupt Kasper A.S.L Ltd. for $168.6 million, outbidding rival Kellwood Co. of Chesterfield by $5 million.

The move, announced Tuesday, sets the stage for a bidding war between Jones and Kellwood when Kasper officially goes on the auction block Thursday.

This is not the first time Kellwood and Jones have butted heads. In June, Kellwood beat out Jones to win the lucrative new Calvin Klein women's sportswear license from Phillips-Van Heusen Corp.
