Santarus, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company developing therapies for gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, today reported positive results of a Phase III clinical trial evaluating SAN-05, an orally delivered immediate-release omeprazole suspension, in critically ill ventilated patients at risk for upper GI bleeding. The blinded trial compared SAN-05 with intravenous cimetidine, a histamine-2 receptor antagonist and the only drug currently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of upper GI bleeding in critically ill patients.
