THE WEEKLY STANDARD, a right-wing US magazine, revealed its lack of competency in Catholic theology when J. Bottum, the magazine's books & arts editor, claimed that Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota had been instructed by his bishop to stop calling himself a Catholic. According to Bottum, Bishop Robert Carlson of Sioux Falls sent Daschle a letter, "directing him to remove from his congressional biography and campaign documents all references to his standing as a member of the Catholic church."
