Aug. 7--Balking at building a professional-style ballfield atop a settling landfill, Major League Baseball has dropped plans for a youth baseball academy on the old Sheldon-Arleta dump, officials said Wednesday.
City Council President Alex Padilla had made the baseball academy a pet project and had worked to get the camp for urban and minority young people built in the northeast San Fernando Valley. He said he was disappointed to learn the academy will be built in Compton.
