THE Anglican Church was on the brink of civil war last night over its first openly homosexual bishop.
Anglican leaders in Africa, Australia, the Far East and England threatened to break with the American churchmen who agreed to the promotion of Canon Gene Robinson.
The vote by U.S. Episcopal Church bishops to ratify the appointment of Canon Robinson - who left his wife and went to live with a male partner - was described as 'catastrophic' by one Anglican archbishop.
And it left Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams begging for calm.
