It wasn't entirely a surprise with cheddar cheese prices rising in recent weeks, but the USDA's Aug. 1 confirmation of a big increase in the cheese milk price in July brought cheers across Wisconsin.

The July gain of $2.03 per hundredweight in the basic cheese milk price to $11.78 was just the fourth month in the 42 years such prices have been recorded that the monthly price has increased more than $2.

The others were June 1998, with a $2.22 increase; July 1999, $2.17; and August 1999, $2.20.
