ATTEBERY BEGINS HIS WORK on an apologetic note, wondering how he got himself into the subject of gender when there are already so many studies on the subject, particularly by women authors and scholars. But, he admits, gender seemed to crop up everywhere, whether his approach to science fiction was by theme or by period, and that it manifested itself "in weird, powerful ways that no one seemed to have mentioned" (1). Thus the reader is enticed to see what new paths of thought the author intends to explore.
As the title of the first chapter "Secret decoder ring" suggests, Attebery departs from the hypothesis ...
