THE LATEST BOOK of the Italian utopian scholar Arrigo Colombo, La societa amorosa, follows the socialist line of Owen, Fourier and Cabet, aimed at fashioning projects for actual utopian communities based on human solidarity. Colombo focuses primarily on a revival of Fourier's Nouveau monde amoureux, a utopia which challenges the institutionalized Christian ethics of monadic family. He blames the Christian liberal repression of spontaneous sexual passion and, ultimately, of a genuine human solidarity.
