The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) celebrates today the 40th anniversary of the Agricultural Land Reform Code, Republic Act 3844, which was signed into law on Aug. 8, 1963, by then President Diosdado Macapagal.

It was during the incumbency of President Macapagal, hailed as the father of agrarian reform, that genuine land reform legislation was passed. Hailed as one that would emancipate Filipino farmers from the bondage of tenancy, it raised the hopes of the long-improverished Filipino tenants whose lives have been shackled to a colonial and tenurial system.
