Maybe America wasn't ready to see Captain America on a horse in 1971. Or maybe Hollywood's power brokers miscalculated.
When "Easy Rider" made Peter Fonda a worldwide cult icon of counterculture cool, he used his clout to direct and star in "The Hired Hand," a laconic, quirky western in which characters and mythologies were more important than ridin', ropin' and revenge. The film's distributor scarcely gave it a chance, booking it in just 52 theaters nationwide. For three decades, it has been lamented as one of the finest overlooked films of its era.
Now it has been revived around screenings at the 2001 Venice ...
