JOHN BANKS, the flamboyant and controversial bookmaker who lit up the betting ring in the 1960s and 1970s, died yesterday, aged 68, after a long battle against throat cancer.

Banks was also a racehorse owner of distinction and latterly chairman of the Rails Bookmakers' Association, seeing through the ground-breaking changes that resulted in fellow rails layers being able to display prices.
