Aug. 10--A fad called "teak surfing" is heightening concern about carbon monoxide poisoning among boaters--a problem being investigated this weekend at Lake Lanier.
The colorless, odorless gas has caused nearly 500 poisonings and 94 deaths among boaters since 1990, federal officials say. Many more incidents probably go unreported.
And the practice of teak surfing--lying on the wooden swim platform at the back of an inboard-outboard ski boat, then sliding into the wave between the V-shaped wake--may add to the danger.
