When John Ashton lost his space, the Avenue Theater almost was lost forever.
After running one of the area's only commercial theaters for a decade he was spent - and bewildered by the landlord's decision to turn the 17th Avenue building into a banquet hall.
``I went down to southern Colorado and tried to rid my brain of all thought and worry and dread and that stuff,'' Ashton says. ``At the same time, I couldn't give up the desire to have a theater.''
After careers as a journalist, radio host and raconteur for hire, Ashton had found his calling.
