Margaret Wyszomirski's comparison in 1998 of cultural policies in the United States and Japan focused on "identifying key systematic assumptions and characteristics" (Wyszomirski 1998, 268). In this article I build, to some degree, on her exploration of policy implications and link professional music organizations' concerns about audience development with music education.
Examination of the political and structural background for current music education in the United States and Japan--the two largest economies in the world--reveals some interesting factors for comparison. As Wyszomirski so aptly noted, "the intersection of politics and the arts, which is ...
