Lions will put their shirts on [pounds sterling]1.5m deal; RUGBY UNION Clubs to reap the benefits as touring team double their money.

THE Lions are finalising a record [pounds sterling] 1.5million shirt sponsorship deal for their 2005 New Zealand tour, doubling the value of the cherished red jersey.

Rugby's most famous touring team are bucking the trend in a depressed global market which forced the Six Nations to take a 30 per cent cut in television money.

Where the Lions shirt deal was worth [pounds sterling]750,000 in Australia two years ago, two multinational sponsors are ready to pay twice as much.

John Feehan, chief executive of the British and Irish Lions Ltd, said: 'Discussions are at a very advanced stage with a couple of companies who want the jersey.
