Many studies have been done to determine if the position of a laboring mother reduces labor pain. However, most data have been inconclusive. Researchers recently attempted to determine if maternal position reduced the intensity of labor pain during dilatation from six to eight centimeters.
Laboring women's pain intensity was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS). Participants included thirty-nine primiparous and nineteen multiparous women. They alternated sitting and supine positions for fifteen minutes during cervical dilatation from six to eight centimeters.
