LIKE the pound, the pint, the yard and the mile, it is a measurement that the British have been loath to ditch.

Looking at temperatures in oldfashioned Fahrenheit rather than centigrade or Celsius is still many people's favourite way of telling when we're in the middle of a heatwave.

Yet the choice of measurement is largely a generational divide, since British schools ditched Fahrenheit in the mid-70s - meaning most people aged below 30 are left somewhat nonplussed by excitement at a 100F heatwave.
