Two public HOUSES
The Cross Keys (42p) and the Mayflower (47p) are two designs on a new set of `pub signs' postage stamps issued this week. They remind us of the connection between church and pub down the ages.
As you travel round the country, look at the names of the pubs. They can be very revealing. Take the Bull (as in Ambridge). If it's an old building, it may have started life as a pilgrims' hostel, run by the local monastery. Outside they would display the bull, or seal (Latin: bulla) of the house. The Bell Inn too, ...
