NOTHING makes us feel better than to find ourselves in good company.

Yesterday, it was announced that for the tenth successive year, the Labrador has topped a national poll.

Once again, it has been named Britain's most popular dog, exactly a century after the breed was first recognised by the Kennel Club.

All the best people own Labradors, from Prince William and his Widgeon to David Blunkett and his guide dog Sadie. A friend of mine lay down on the kitchen floor and rolled on his back the other day, when his wife came in.

'What's wrong with you?', she demanded, in mingled alarm and disgust.
