THE men who fought at Monte Cassino suffered in one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War.
As the Allies tried to push northwards into Italy in January 1944, German resistance centred on the magnificent hilltop Benedictine abbey of Monte Cassino, which dominated the surrounding area.
Attacks by British, American, Polish, Indian and New Zealand troops failed and the controversial decision was taken to bomb the 1,400-year-old building.
