Cirque du Soleil's artistic director, Pierre Parisien, says it's still possible to run away and join the circus. And every year, many try. "More and more people send their video to our casting department," Parisien said.
That's a big change for the Montreal-based company that began in 1984 as a festival of street performers. In its 19 years, the acclaimed circus has grown from a troupe entertaining crowds no larger than 800 to a juggernaut that operates eight shows, with three permanent installations in Las Vegas and Florida, while the remainder travel throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
