Aug. 15--One grounding on the way up to Port Everglades several years ago was enough for Coastal Tug & Barge to swear off that portion of the Intracoastal Waterway.
If a tug or barge needs work, they go to Tampa the long way, rather than across Lake Okeechobee, said Kenneth Gray, manager of regulatory compliance for the Miami company.
"It's too dangerous for us, and there are too many risks," Gray said at a town meeting Thursday in Coconut Grove designed to drum up support for more federal money to maintain the waterway.
