A Birmingham music teacher whose first novel was published earlier this year has made it on to the long list for one of literature's most prestigious prizes.
Clare Morrall, from Quinton, beat off competition from more established novelists such J G Ballard, Peter Ackroyd and Jim Crace to make through to the 'semi-final' stage of this year's Booker Prize.
