The 17,149 employees represented in the Top 200 accounted for sales of $3.74 billion in 2002, or sales-per-employee of $218,095. This represents a 2% decline from 2001, when sales-per-employee reached $222,579. The reduction in employee productivity neatly parallels the decline in unit prices of most music products. Put more directly, the employee effort required to move a $500 guitar from the receiving dock into the customers hands is no different from the effort involved in moving a unit that sells for $490.
