Aug. 17--DETROIT--As chairman of General Motors Corp., Jack Smith on any average day could field phone calls from powerful politicians, important foreign dignitaries, his own senior executives and, oh yes, Larry Dewey.
The president of GM Allison Transmission Division in Indianapolis, Dewey enjoyed a rare privilege. He could sidestep GM's legendary bureaucracy. Dewey's immediate boss was Smith himself.
But the chairman retired in May. Before he left, Smith handed direct responsibility for Allison to a highly regarded GM engineer, Thomas Stephens.
