SAN FRANCISCO -- For more than a decade, debate has clouded the use of chlorinated paraffins, an effective additive for metalworking fluids. The perception that chlorinated paraffins may be a health hazard has made many users leery of lubricants that contain these chemicals, especially wherever workers might be exposed to cutting and grinding fluids.
Fears have been heightened since 1989, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer said that one type of chlorinated paraffins could cause cancer in humans.
