IDI Amin,Uganda's former dictator, who was indulged by the West until the excesses of his murderous rule led to his downfall,has died,aged around 78.

He exhibited a cruelty almost unmatched in the post-war world. As a former heavyweight boxing champion,Amin stood six foot four and weighed 20 stone. Relishing his monstrous reputation,he boasted of ``visitations from God'' which included (disastrous) financial advice.

Reputedly,he had a deep freeze packed with the heads of his victims. Although popularly regarded as insane,his political manipulation and ruthlessly calculated cruelty indicated otherwise.
