The Lake County Discovery Museum is hosting Illinois' largest Civil War Encampment today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lakewood Forest Preserve near Wauconda. Call (847) 968-3400.
About 2,000 Lake County men enlisted to serve during the Civil War (1861-1865). Soldiers from Lake and Jo Davies Counties formed the 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The most famous battle this regiment participated in was the Battle of Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 18 to 20, 1863. In this single battle, the regiment lost half its ranks and one of its favorite officers - Lt. Col. Isaac Clarke of Waukegan.
