It's being touted as the beginning of the end for Brazil's president.

Not that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being deposed -- like so many South American presidents during the continent's turbulent past. Just the opposite.

Having just scored a major political victory in the eighth month of his 4-year mandate, it's his career as a novice president that is winding down. Gone are the days of calling the Lula administration "fledgling" or "newly inaugurated." With a hard-fought victory of balancing Brazil's lopsided pension program, Lula has entered a new phase of his presidency.
