AS THOMAS HARDY'S ``The Mayor of Casterbridge'' opens, the loutish Michael Henchard (as played by Ciaran Hinds in A&E's handsome adaptation) comes upon a tented community and, in a drunken rage, sells off his wife, Susan (Juliet Aubrey), and their infant daughter to the highest bidder. Thus rid of what he in his stupor considers a yoke upon his neck, he manages to make good of his life - but shamed by his actions, he swears himself off alcohol.
A&E's film then cuts to 19 years later, when Susan, believing the man who purchased her to be dead, returns to search for Henchard. She finds he has become the mayor of Casterbridge ...
