Auto Industry Debates Safety Vs. Fuel Economy
WASHINGTON--Which is more important, fuel economy or auto safety?
That's the crux of a debate in Congress over a bill that would impose tougher fuel economy standards on cars to reduce global warming and lessen this country's dependence on foreign oil.
With the outbreak of war in the Middle East and the sudden threat to the U.S. oil supply, Congress experienced renewed pressure to take some action toward fuel conservation.
