2002 SEASON IN REVIEW: The Golden Gophers put forth a solid effort on both
sides of the football in 2002, and the results were obvious as the team posted
an 8-5 record, which included a 29-14 victory over Arkansas in the Music City

Article: Larkin Royals Conference: Upstate Eight Coach: Amy Silverman (7th season) Last year: 7-22 Who's Back: Seniors Mel San Miguel, 5-5 G; Cordney Jones, 6-3 C; Alexis Gimpert, 6-foot F/C; Juniors Bri Guihan, 6-1 F; Tissanie Simmons, 5-6 G. Who's New: Senior Megan Sprangers, 5-8 G; Juniors Kim Shorter, 5-8 G; Outlook: Coming off a 7-22 year, Larkin has a chance to be one of the most improved teams in the Upstate Eight. The Royals have three returning six-footers in Gimpert, Jones and Guihan. Silverman said she expects big years out of them all, especially the 6-3 Jones who came on at the end of last year to earn honorable mention all-conference honors. At the guard position, last year's leading scorer San Miguel (9 ppg, honorable mention all-conference 2 years in a row) will be relied on for leadership and scoring. "She's been so consistent. We're looking for her to take over and lead this team to success," Silverman said. Simmons and Shorter are both quick guards who can contribute. The Royals also may get a boost from Sprangers, who played varsity two years ago but sat out her junior year. "This year I feel we have size and speed. If we stay healthy, this could be a good season for us," Silverman said. "When last year ended, I was very excited because we were improving."
