The Food and Drug Administration plans to get tougher with companies that over-hype health benefits of products by working with the Securities and Exchange Commission to punish companies that mislead consumers.
The agency also promises to crack down on all violators with criminal charges and hefty fines for any company or individual counterfeiting drugs or committing any other crime that threatens the food or drug supply. "Those who would go so far as to break the law and threaten patient health to make a buck should take note: We will come after you, and we will get you," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Mark B. McClellan.
