New directions in Federal regulations on hazardous waste
Laboratorians must remain alert for increasing rules on hazardous waste disposal and adapt protocols as needed.
Clinical laboratorians daily confront potentially harmful chemicals, such as concentrated acids, and biologic hazards, such as specimens of patients infected with HIV. These threats have long been recognized and countered by effective laboratory safety procedures. Practices such as autoclaving contaminated trash have been developed to minimize risk to the world outside the laboratory.
