I had always figured that when Bob Hope passed on, I would write an obituary with a personal touch - one in which I told of my own close encounter with one of the greatest comedians and finest human beings of our time.
I would relate, as I first did more than 20 years ago, the story of how we and the man of a million memories once stayed in the same hotel.
I would tell how, very late at night, Bill and I turned a corner in the hotel corridor and came face to face with a legendary figure who was smaller, more frail and far more humble than we had expected.
