Local history describes Capt. William Carver as one of the area's most prominent colonial leaders.
Known as a successful master mariner and ship owner, Carver also held large tracts of land and became a gentleman tobacco farmer. Popular among his peers, Carver also served in the House of Burgesses and held an officer's rank in the local militia. Deeds dated as early as 1659 tell us he owned most of the land where Portsmouth stands today.
As a trusted member of Virginia's land gentry, Carver also was called on by the royal governor to serve as a justice for Norfolk County.
