WASHINGTON _ When Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson leaves the No. 2 post at the Justice Department at the end of next week, he will become the 12th presidential appointee to have left Attorney General John Ashcroft's department.

Resignations are common in a year preceding a presidential election.
