WASHINGTON _ When Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson leaves the No. 2 post at the Justice Department at the end of next week, he will become the 12th presidential appointee to have left Attorney General John Ashcroft's department.
Resignations are common in a year preceding a presidential election. But the departures from the Justice Department, about one-third of its total appointees, far outstrip those at the federal government's large agencies, according to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch analysis.
