With budgets slashed, school districts are tempted to simply shut down school air conditioning systems for the summer or any other vacation period, even weekends. That's probably the worst thing to do--it can easily create a mold problem that may cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix, even for a single building.

The risk is even greater this year in many parts of the United States, where wet weather has heightened the potential for damage caused by high humidity levels in the schools.
