Ito En Ltd, a major drinks manufacturer, has developed technology enabling it to mix used wet green tea leaves with resin to create plastic that releases a tea fragrance and has the capability to fight harmful bacteria.
The company jointly developed the technology with NOF Corporation, which supplies the polyolefin resin. The plastic also contain polyphenol, the antioxidant agent found in the beverage, and the scent of tea leaves.
Ito En has devised a way to preserve damp tea leaves at room temperature, after they have been used to make tea. This eliminates the need for drying the leaves in order to use them in the plastic.
