Binghamton -- When the Toronto Blue Jays selected high school third baseman Alexis Rios with the 19th pick overall in the June 1999 draft, baseball insiders immediately labeled Rios a "signability pick" - and rightly so.
But don't confuse signability with a lack of ability. Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vernon Wells was called a signability pick, too, and he has become one of baseball's brighter young stars.
Rios, who's now the center fielder with the Blue Jays' Double-A team at New Haven, Conn., could join Wells in the Toronto outfield in 2005 after spending next season with the Triple-A Syracuse SkyChiefs. ...
