Rosemary Showell has been a district nurse for 23 years of her 35-year nursing career. In that time she has visited many people caught in what she describes as a cycle of chronic pain. She tells of the many hours spent trying to secure help for these people, hampered by ten-month long waiting lists for hospital pain clinics, the long periods between appointments and the difficulty of transporting people to and from hospital. Her time is nothing though, she says, compared with the impact chronic pain has on entire families.
