Late August and early September is the season when baby Blandings turtles emerge from their shells to begin their new lives.
Blandings turtles, named for the 18th century naturalist William Blanding, range from Nova Scotia in Canada, west as far as Nebraska, in places where bogs and other wetlands are found. They are a threatened species in both Illinois and Wisconsin. A threatened species is one that may become endangered in the near future. An endangered species is one that is in peril of becoming extinct in all or part of its range.
