Athletes respond to the injury experience in very different ways (Brewer, 1994; Brewer, 2001; Flint, 1998; Smith, Scott, O'Fallon, & Young, 1990). Many studies have shown that injured athletes report negative emotions following the onset of a sport injury (Chan & Grossman, 1988; Crossman, Gluck, & Jamieson, 1995; Pearson & Jones, 1992; Quackenbush & Crossman, 1994). Such findings are not only limited to self-report measures: qualitative methods have revealed that athletes encounter similar feelings (Wiese-Bjornstal, Smith, Shafer, & Money, 1998).
