WHEN he landed the part of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the new Star Wars films, Ewan McGregor thought all his boyhood dreams had come true.

But yesterday the Scots actor admitted he hadn' t been prepared for the role's dark side - and revealed how the pressures of instant superstardom drove him to drink.

McGregor, 32, first shot to fame as drug addict Renton in 1996's low-budget adaptation of Irvine Welsh's Trainspotting.

However, after accepting the role of Jedi knight Obi-Wan in 1999's Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace, he suddenly found himself in the full glare of Hollywood's spotlight.
