Many women are turning to black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) to ease menopausal symptoms. But if you're a woman being treated for breast cancer, this herbal remedy may have unintended consequences, warn researchers from the Yale University School of Medicine.
Black Cohosh's Double-Edged Sword? In a series of lab experiments, the researchers examined the effects of three standardized black cohosh extracts on mouse breast cancer cells. They compared the response when the cells were exposed to black cohosh alone to when they were exposed to black cohosh in combination with each of three common chemotherapy drugs, Adriamycin, Taxotere and Cisplatin.
