LIVESTOCK rings at country shows are a great place to gossip, mickey- take and scandalise. Judging can be dissected and verdicts rubbished, while everyone can indulge the newest rural past time -bemoaning Defra's livestock movement rules.
Everyone knows they are ridiculous. They are less likely to deter foot-and- mouth outbreak than a pee into the wind: livestock vehicles must be cleansed on and off show fields,but not other cars. And competition must take place on land free of livestock for 28days, even though exhibits may be nose-to-nose with adjacent land which has been recently grazed.
Pity the poor biosecurity staff ...
