NEW YORK - A new 800-pound gorilla is about to stomp its way into the retail sporting goods scene.
The merger of Gart Sports and The Sports Authority, finalized earlier this month, is the sporting goods industry's latest shot at a dominant national chain, but it won't be an easy feat.
Previous efforts were wrought with failure. Herman's Sporting Goods, Just for Feet and the former TSA itself all heralded their coast-to-coast ambitions, only to implode under the strain.
